- On 5-6 November 2026, RADIUNCE will host an international, multidisciplinary workshop with the title ‘Political Elites in an Uncertain World: Behaviour, Decision-Making and Communication in Challenging Situations’ at Utrecht University. Keep an eye out for the call for papers and posters!
UPCOMING & RECENT CONFERENCES
- The RADIUNCE team – specifically senior researcher Sjoerd Stolwijk and PhDs Ella MacLaughlin & Olaf van der Veen – will present four studies focusing on uncertainty and political elites from different angles at the ISPP Annual Meeting from 16-19 July in New Castle, United Kingdom.
- RADIUNCE PI Barbara Vis attended the European Political Science Society (EPSS) Conference from 18-20 June in Belfast, Ireland, where she co-chaired a panel and presented a study on uncertainty attitudes and politicians political decision-making process (co-authored with Sjoerd Stolwijk).
- RADIUNCE senior researcher Sjoerd Stolwijk and RADIUNCE PhDs Naara Ulmke and Olaf van der Veen attended the NIG Annual Conference from 5-6 February 2026 in Leuven, Belgium, where they presented their ongoing research (co-authored with PI Barbara Vis and co-supervisors Sjors Overman and Marija Aleksovska).
- RADIUNCE PhD Ella MacLaughlin attended the APSA Annual Meeting from 10-14 September 2025 in Vancouver, Canada, where she presented a next version of the detecting uncertainty in political speech paper (co-authored with PI Barbara Vis).
- RADIUNCE PhDs Olaf van der Veen and Ella MacLaughlin served as co-chairs (with Georg Wenzelburger) and discussants of the panel ‘Evidence and Policymaking in Times of Uncertainty and Polycrisis’ at the ECPR General Conference from 26-29 August 2025 in Thessaloniki, Greece. This panel addressed the timely question how varying degrees and types of (un-)certainty influence political decision-making. Ella presented a next version of the detecting uncertainty in political speech; Olaf presented a paper – co-authored with Marija Aleksovska & Barbara Vis on how British political elites reacted to different types of uncertainty during the Covid-19 pandemic.
- RADIUNCE PhDs Naara Ulmke and Olaf van der Veen and PI Barbara Vis attended the Politicologenetmaal in Groningen, the Netherlands on 12-13 June 2025. They presented three papers in the workshop on Political Psychology.
- RADIUNCE PhD Ella MacLaughlin presented a paper – co-authored with Barbara Vis – on detecting uncertainty in text at the COMPTEXT conference in Vienna, Austria on between 24 and 26 April 2025.
- Together with Wieke Pot, Wouter Lammers, and Jorren Scherpenisse, RADIUNCE’s PI Barbara Vis chaired the panel ‘Robust & time sensitive governance: Dealing with uncertainty’ at the NIG Conference in Ghent, Belgium on 6-7 February 2025. This panel focused on what enables governments to deal with uncertainty in the face of turbulence and when and why they do not deal with uncertainty at all. The RADIUNCE team presented three co-authored papers at this conference.

- On April 1, 2026, RADIUNCE PI Barbara Vis & senior researcher Sjoerd Stolwijk will visit an elementary school in Utrecht to talk about their research as part of Utrecht University’s Meet the Professor project.
- From 15-19 September 2025, RADIUNCE postdoc Sjoerd Stolwijk taught the GESIS Training course Introduction to Machine Learning for Text Analysis with Python (with Ruppert Kiddle) in Mannheim, Germany.
- On February 28, 2025 Ella MacLaughlin gave a presentation on the project ‘Detecting uncertainty in text’, joint work with Barbara Vis, at the Hot Politics Lab.
- In November and December 2024, Olaf van der Veen visited three high schools in Utrecht to talk about his research as part of Utrecht University’s Rector’s League program.
- On 21-22 May, 2024, Barbara Vis gave a presentation on the work done in RADIUNCE at the workshop entitled ‘Theoretical and methodological approaches to using uncertainty information in policy’ at KU Leuven, Belgium.
- On September 29, 2023, Barbara Vis visited Aarhus University, where she among other things presented the RADIUNCE project.
- On May 16, 2023, RADIUNCE’s affliated researcher Achim Goerres (University of Duisburg-Essen) visited Utrecht University School of Governance and gave a talk entitled ‘Living in Novaland: Is it possible to simulate the experience of states, economies, and public policies in a virtual online state?’
- On March 17, 2023, Barbara Vis gave a talk entitled ‘How Do Politicians Respond to Different Types of Uncertain Phenomena? Introducing a Conceptual Map’ at the Hot Politics Lab. A recording of the talk is available here.
- On February 14, 2023, Barbara Vis presented the RADIUNCE project to the Public Governance research group at Utrecht University School of Governance.
- On February 8, 2023, Barbara Vis visited the Media, Movements and Politics (M²P) group at Antwerp University, where she among other things will talk about the RADIUNCE project.
